Things to Ponder When Designing Your Swimming Pool (Besides How Much it Costs)

Posted on: September 10th, 2012 by Dave No Comments

There are lots of articles out there that cover what you need to think about if you are thinking about putting a swimming pool in, and most of those go over what you plan on doing with the swimming pool in terms of your lifestyle and how much budget you have to devote to building this backyard oasis.

But, basically, your budget is going to drive much of the design because, if you are like most people, you have a limit on what you spend that, in turn, limits what type of swimming pool you are going to be able to install.

This blog post is going to cover some of the other things you can do to help shape your design decision for your swimming pool.

Ask. Look. Learn.

You won’t know how to design your swimming pool if you don’t first look around and ask others about their experiences. Much insight can be gained from those that already have swimming pools. They will most likely admit what they would and would not do if they were to do it all over again with the knowledge and experience they have now. Capitalize on that and let it shape how you design your swimming pool.

This is also a time to learn about the potential for the unexpected and what those unknowns might look like. This could involve the swimming pool construction process or it could be related to surprise costs that you had not yet considered yourself.

Besides those you know, use the power of social media and social networking to find blogs and forums online where others have discussed their swimming pool construction experience and learn what they would have changed. While everything may not be applicable to your specific situation, this type of interaction helps you think beyond what you thought you knew about swimming pool design.

Collect Designs and Create a Wish List (Then, Get Real)

From interior design and landscaping to wedding dresses and hairstyles, people often collect photos of things or styles they like as they build their own idea of what they would like for themselves. Same goes with a swimming pool design.

The beauty of the Internet is that there are so many pictures and visuals available that make it easy to see what you could do with your swimming pool, including shapes, decking, tiles, lighting and accessories. A good idea is to gather at least a dozen different swimming pool designs and then determine any patterns to see what stands out that could be used for your own swimming pool design.

There is also software available that lets you use your own yard dimensions and place a 3D rendering of it with the swimming pool so you can get a better visual of what it might look like before you sign the contract, pull permits, and start the swimming pool construction process.

While you design your swimming pool, make a list of the features and accessories that you would like to have on your swimming pool so you can start whittling it down when the reality hits about what you can and cannot afford.

You can have the must-haves, the nice-to-haves, and the really over-the-tops (like a grotto and water slide, etc.). This will help bring your swimming pool design back down to reality and help you finalize what you plan to do.

If you are ready to get started and have a pretty good idea of what type of swimming pool design you want, then let’s talk.
